How Hot Temperatures Can Affect Your Car’s Performance

Feeling hot this summer in the Granite State? So does your car. As temperatures reach record-highs in New Hampshire, your car may be at risk of overheating, leading to system damage. According to AAA, extremely hot temperatures last summer resulted in 1.83 million drivers ending up on the side of the road with a “battery-related” incident.

Below, our team at HM MotorWorks has put together a guide on how the warm weather is affecting your car.

How Hot Temperatures Can Damage Your Car:

Tires: Hotter temperatures can cause your car’s tires to expand, increasing their pressure. The more inflated your tires are, the more they’re at risk of blowing out.

Engine: If you’re driving during a heatwave, you’re probably going to turn on your car’s air conditioning system. But while the inside of your car may be cool, under the hood isn’t. Your engine will be working overtime, which can gradually affect its performance & fuel efficiency.

Battery: Hot outside? Your car’s battery can swell. Even worse: the water in your car’s battery can also evaporate.

How to Keep Your Car Safe in Hot Temperatures:

  • Parking your car under a shaded area.
  • Consider getting a cover for your car. With a proper cover, you can reduce sunlight emissions and keep your car cool in hot temperatures.
  • Crack open the windows. With ventilation, your car’s internal temperatures can drastically reduce.
  • Consider getting your car’s windows tinted. According to Forbes, tinted windows can block “35-65% of solar heat transmission and nearly 99% of the UV rays.”
  • Double-check your car’s coolant levels. In hot temperatures, your car’s coolant can evaporate, which can cause overheating. To keep your car’s coolant levels steady, be sure to use a coolant mixture that’s recommended for your car.
  • Get an oil change. The hotter it is outside, the thinner your car’s oil becomes. With an oil change, you can reduce engine damage and prevent overheating.
  • Avoid using your car during the hottest times of the day.
